Simon Martin
Born in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, in 1981, Simon Martin is a composer and artistic director of Projections libérantes, a contemporary concert music company which he founded in 2011, in Montreal.
Described by the press as “fascinating,” “hypnotic,” and “magnetic,” Simon Martin’s music captures the attention of all audiences, whether they’re eager for singular artistic experiences or simply in search of a timeless space for contemplation.
His creations aim to reveal the inherent beauty of sound: a material that arises from the stillness of silence, unfolds in space, then disappears without a trace. Simon Martin’s artistic approach is based on the staging of this metaphor of being and non-being. The narrative of his works is chiseled from the very material of sound: this quest for harmonic perfection becomes a source of both beauty and drama.
Artistic statement
“Music emerges from the negation of sound in favor of its organization. Yet a sound that is completely abandoned to its autonomy, rather than collected as material for poetic facture, would return to the rumor of nature. In other words, to be perceived aesthetically, sound needs music just as much as music needs sound. This dialectical tension lies at the heart of my work; in its very essence, the expression of an existential reflexivity.”
